μᾶλλον (comp. of the adv. μάλα; Hom.+) ‘more, rather’① to a greater or higher degree, more Phil 1:12. πολλῷ μᾶλλον ἔκραζεν he cried out even more loudly Mk 10:48; Lk 18:39. ἔτι μᾶλλον καὶ μᾶλλον more and more (cp. Diog. L. 9, 10, 2) Phil 1:9; Hs 9, 1, 8. ἐγὼ μᾶλλον I can do so even more Phil 3:4. The thing compared is introduced by ἤ (Apollon. Paradox. 9; Appian, Iber. 90 §392; Lucian, Adv. Ind. 2) Mt 18:13 or stands in the gen. of comparison (X., Mem. 4, 3, 8, Cyr. 3, 3, 45) πάντων ὑμῶν μ. γλώσσαις λαλῶ I (can) speak in tongues more than you all 1 Cor 14:18 (Just., A I, 12, 1 πάντων μᾶλλον ἀνθρώπων).—Abs. μ. can mean to a greater degree (than before), even more, now more than ever Lk 5:15; J 5:18; 19:8; Ac 5:14; 22:2; 2 Cor 7:7. Somet. it is also added to verbs: Σαῦλος μ. ἐνεδυναμοῦτο Ac 9:22.—In combination w. an adj. it takes the place of the comparative (Hom. et al.; Just., D. 107, 2 γενεὰν … μοιχαλίδα μ.; Synes., Ep. 123 p. 259d μ. ἄξιος) μακάριόν ἐστιν μᾶλλον Ac 20:35 (s. 3c below). καλόν ἐστιν αὐτῷ μᾶλλον Mk 9:42; cp. 1 Cor 9:15. πολλῷ μ. ἀναγκαῖά ἐστιν they are even more necessary 1 Cor 12:22. πολλὰ τ. τέκνα τῆς ἐρήμου μᾶλλον ἢ τῆς ἐχούσης τ. ἄνδρα the children of the desolate woman are numerous to a higher degree than (the children) of the woman who has a husband = the children are more numerous Gal 4:27 (Is 54:1).—Pleonastically w. words and expressions that already contain the idea ‘more’ (Kühner-G. σκεῦος, ους, τό (Aristoph., Thu.+)① a material object used to meet some need in an occupation or other responsibility, gener. thing, object used for any purpose at all (e.g. a table: Diod S 17, 66, 5) Mk 11:16 (PCasey, CBQ 59, ’97, 306–32). σκεῦος ἐλεφάντινον or ἐκ ξύλου Rv 18:12ab. Pl. (Diod S 13, 12, 6) Dg 2:2–4. Of all one has (Jos., Vi. 68; 69) τὰ σκεύη αὐτοῦ his property Lk 17:31.—Mt 12:29; Mk 3:27 (both in allusion to Is 49:24f).—By an added statement or via the context σκ. can become an object of a certain specific kind: τὰ σκεύη τῆς λειτουργίας the equipment used in cultic service Hb 9:21 (ParJer 3:9; 11:18; cp. Jos., Bell. 6, 389 τὰ πρὸς τὰς ἱερουργίας σκεύη). Also τὰ ἅγια σκεύη Ox 840, 14; 21; 29f (Jos., Bell. 2, 321; cp. AHanson, JTS 32, ’81, 433–43), those who are saved σκ. ἐλέους vs. 23.—1 Pt 3:7 woman is called ἀσθενέστερον σκεῦος (ἀσθενής 2a). τὸ ἑαυτοῦ σκεῦος 1 Th 4:4 from antiquity has been interpreted to mean one’s own body (Theodoret, Calvin, Milligan, Schlatter, MDibelius; RKnox, transl. ’44; CCD transl. ’41, mg.; NRSV) or one’s own wife (Theodore of Mopsuestia, Schmiedel, vDobschütz, Frame, Oepke; WVogel, ThBl 13, ’34, 83–85; RSV et al.). The former interpr. is supported by passages cited at the beg. of this section 3, and the latter is in accord w. rabb. usage (Billerb. III 632f. S. also κτάομαι 1). Also probable for 1 Th 4:4 is ‘penis’ (so Antistius [I A.D.] in Anthol. Plan. 4, 243; Aelian, NA 17, 11; cp. the euphemistic Lat. ‘vasa’ in this sense: Plautus, Poenulus. 863; s. Remains the single λ in ἔλοψ, Lat. (h)elops; as this notation seems to indicate a special fish, ἔλοψ could be of foreign origin. This would mean a cross of a foreign fish name with an inherited adjective - Cf. Thompson s. v. and Strömberg Fischnamen 30f. - The interchange λ\/λλ is frequent in Pre-Greek (Fur. 387); further we find ο\/α and π\/β: ἀλ(λ)άβης (Str. 17,2,4, Ath. 7, 312b; PTeb.), ἔλαψ (Gp.); interchange - αβ-\/- οπ- is well known. Fur. 107; here also ἀλλοπίης. So we prob. have a pre-Greek word fo a great fish. Further there are expressions for elbow, arm and other (crooked) body-parts with initial vowel, e.g. Lith. alkúne `elbow', Russ. lókotь `el(bow)' (PSlav. * olkъt-), Arm. olok` `shin-bone'. - If one cuts off the k and adds (without motivation) ei (IE el-ei-, l-ei- `bend') one is helpless lost "in the etymological marsh", s. WP. 1, 156ff., Pok. 307ff., W.-Hofmann s. lacertus, lanx, valgus. Meaning: Hades (Il.).Derivatives: Άϊδωνεύς (Il.), see Risch 145.Origin: IE [Indo-European] [1125] *n̥-uid-Etymology: An inscription from Thessaly (SEG 16, 380) gives ΑϜιδαν. Thieme's proposal (1952 = Studien idg. Wortkunde 35 -55 that the word derives from *sm̥ uid-, found in Skt. sam vid-, as `das Sichzusammenfinden [of the family in the underworld]' is not correct, as then Άιδ- should mean `Underworld', not the God of the Underworld; but in Homer it is clear that it means the God, e.g. in formulaic δόμον Ἄιδος εἴσω. Also the aspiration is secondary (in Attic, from ὁ Α. (Kamerbeek ap. Ruijgh, Lingua 25, 1970, 307). The other explanation, as *n̥-uid-, `the Unseen', seems the correct one. Lastly Beekes FS Watkins, 1998, 17 - 19, who points out that the replacement of a root noun, first in the nominative (here as final element of a compound), is parallel to φυγή: φύγα-δε. The A- is sometimes lengthened m.c.
